| The Congregation ushers in
the 10th Anniversary of the Methodist University College Ghana (MUCG).
A hindsight of the 2008/2009 academic year brings into focus interesting
milestones of progress made during the year under review. We owe what
ever accomplishments we have realized during the year to our committed
academic staff, dedicated administrative staff, hardworking students
and very co-operative parents and guardians; and above all our almighty
God.
In our bid to provide a congenial atmosphere to enhance teaching
and learning, during the year under review, we managed to finish
work on the south-wing Faculty Building at the Dansoman Campus up
to the first floor. As a result more of our teaching staff had office
accommodation and more lecture rooms were also provided. This gave
us the confidence to expand the human capital base of the University
College by employing 35 additional teaching staff and 22 more non-teaching
staff. By the end of the academic year, the total number of teaching
staff of the Dansoman, Tema, and Wenchi campuses was 144; made up
of 73 full-time and 71 part-time lectures. The non teaching staff
population was 165; consisting of 21 Senior members and 144 Senior
/ Junior staff.
Our student enrollment continued to increase. From a humble beginning
of 213 students in November 2000, MUCG recorded a total number of
3743 students at the end of the 2008/2009 academic year. That was
made up of 1,872 males and 1,871 females. The student enrollment
shows a male: female ratio of 50:50 and demonstrates the seriousness
MUCG attaches to issues of gender balance.
With the rapid increase in the student population at the Tema Campus,
Management saw the need to provide a bigger space for the library
there. A fresh facility was there fore hired and furnished with
more shelves, furniture, air-conditioners, and ten (10) computers;
all connected to the internet. A new permanent site was also acquired
for the construction of the Tema Campus.
Apart from the Methodist Church Ghana, certain international and
para-statal organizations propelled MUCG to the level of growth
it reached during the year under review. The International Fertilizer
Development Center (IFDC) for example gave research grants to the
Faculty of Agriculture of MUCG, Wenchi Campus to carry out studies
into the development of food commodity value chains for maize, soybeans
and cashew. As a result, many activities were carried out. These
included the establishment of Research/ Farmer demonstration plots,
platforms for actors, capacity building activities for partners,
meetings and community fora.
The Faculty of Agriculture, MUCG Wenchi Campus, the Akim Oda Diocese
of The Methodist Church Ghana in collaboration with Presidents Special
Initiative (PSI) started developing an oil palm nursery as part
of the Faculty’s Agri-Business Development (ABCD) on an 89
acre land in Akim Swedru. Two boreholes, jointly funded by MUCG
and the Akim Oda Diocese of The Methodist Church Ghana, were sunk
as part of activities for the provision of year-round water for
irrigating the oil palm seedlings
I am very grateful to all who in diverse ways helped in making
MUCG achieve it goals for the just ended academic year.
Good Bless you all.
