| Mr. Justice Nii Aryeetey,
on behalf of the Council members, thanked President J.E.A Mills for
giving them the opportunity to serve their country. In an interview
with him at his office at Methodist University College Ghana later,
Mr. J.N Aryeetey said he was elated and saw his appointment as an
honour done him and the Methodist University College Ghana. Asked
how he hoped to combine his heavy schedule as Registrar of Methodist
University College Ghana with the role of IPS Council Chairman, he
said the ‘IPS Council meets quarterly except when there is an
emergency.’ He believed that four meetings in a year should
not have any negative impact on his performance as Registrar for MUCG.
He said, although as chairman of the IPS Council, he was also required
to chair the IPS Finance Committee. He did not think that would have
any adverse effect on his work.
On what plans he had for IPS, Mr. Aryeetey said ‘IPS is now
offering first and second degree programmes and my aim is to lead
Council to consolidate the already existing strengths of the institution
and work on its weaknesses.’
Talking about challenges he envisaged in the performance of his
duties as Chairman of the IPS Council, Mr. Aryeetey said these would
include how to ensure that funding for the physical development
of the institution would not slow down work at IPS, how to encourage
staff to be more effective through research, publications and service
to the community as well as how to work towards the amendment of
the IPS Act 1999 to reflect its new status. He added that amendment
of the IPS Act 1999 for example would involve the staff and Management
of IPS to ensure that the drafting of the new law would reflect
its current status and aspiration.
In answer to a question about what strengths he had identified
in the composition of the membership of the IPS and hoped to draw
on, Mr. Aryeetey said the membership of the Council is drawn from
identifiable professional bodies and these were expected to play
a leading role in fashioning policies for the advancement of IPS.
Among the identifiable professional bodies he mentioned were Institute
of Chartered Accountants Ghana (ICAG), Institute of Chartered Secretaries
and Administrators (ICSA), Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana
(CIMG) and the IPS Alumni Association. From these bodies and the
individuals representing them, he hoped to have the requisite skills
and brain for the job. MUCG wishes the Registrar fruitfulness and
success in his tenure as Chairman of IPS council.
