to her ‘managers
promote stability while leaders press for change and that organizations
needed both sides to thrive.’
Continuing to differentiate between Leadership and Management, the
resource person said ‘Leadership sets direction, develops
vision for the future and identifies strategies while Management
plans and budgets to produce underlying results but not change.
Leadership also aligns people and communicates new direction while
Management is about organizing and staffing. Leadership motivates
and inspires people, keeping them moving in the right direction
despite major obstacles, while Management is about controlling and
problem solving.’ She said Management was also about planning
and budgeting to produce underlying results, not change.
According to Dr (Mrs) Drafor-Amenyah ‘leadership is influence:
it is the ability to obtain followers and get people to work for
you when they are not obliged.’ She quoted John Maxwell’s
saying that ‘You can love people without leading them but
you cannot lead people without loving them.’ On influencing
people, she said messages are not accepted just because they are
understood. ‘It requires credibility and trust, she pointed
out. She said influencing is about understanding the issue of power.
She talked about two types of power, namely, positional power and
personal power. Positional power, she said, was the one provided
by the organization, and personal power was the one developed by
the leader.
The talk also covered leadership dimensions ranging from diversity,
gender, cultural, social, emotional intelligence, feedback and assertiveness.
On diversity, she said different people saw things differently;
while some focused on the task structure others focused on the process
and were more fluid. While some were less formal, others were formal
in posture. Dr (Mrs) Drafor-Amenyah made it clear that diversity
was an asset to any organization and needed to be managed well.
She advised participants to be careful about the judgement they
made about people just because they were not like them. On gender,
she admonished women in leadership to balance work and home life.
She told them to have a clear vision, plan, strategy and they should
manage their time well. She observed that male and female styles
of leadership were not the same but it was important that they worked
together effectively.
